The Ethics of Human Trafficking Cases

This month’s Just Ethics presentation explores the numerous ethical considerations that arise in criminal and civil human trafficking litigation. Naomi Bang, Adjunct Professor and Director of the STCL Human Trafficking Clinic, will address the ethical issues that arise in the context of immigration law, specifically the issues of dual representation, assessing the credibility of witnesses who have much at stake, and representation vulnerabilities attorneys might encounter given the nature of these cases. Ann Johnson, Adjunct Professor and Human Trafficking Specialist at the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, will address the signs and challenges associated with identifying human trafficking victims who enter the criminal justice system as defendants. Professor Amanda Peters will discuss the ethical challenges prosecutors face when charging human trafficking victims with state law violations and the importance of balancing federal and state laws and rights.
