Students

The Frank Evans Center for Conflict Resolution is the focal point within the law school for education, research and experiential learning in a variety of dispute resolution procedures.

The Center is instrumental in the coordination of the ADR curriculum.  With the organization and cooperation of the Center, numerous ADR courses are offered to students at South Texas College of Law.  With education in the core dispute resolution courses, students are provided the necessary legal knowledge and practical understanding to competently expertly represent clients in each of the dispute resolution procedures which are utilized in the legal system today.

Currently, the following dispute resolution courses are offered:

  • Alternative Dispute Resolution
  • Arbitration
  • Collaborative Law
  • Family Law Mediation
  • International Commercial Arbitration
  • Mediation Practice
  • Mediation Theory
  • Mediation Theory and Practice
  • Mediation Clinic
  • Negotiation
  • Representation in Mediation
  • Trends in litigation and ADR

Students can receive additional training in Basic Mediation and Family Law Mediation during the summer and winter intersession. In addition, students can gain practical experience in mediation and negotiation through the Mediation Clinic as well as the externships currently offered. Through additional Center activities, such as competitions, research and independent study, students are also able to engage in an assortment of learning opportunities.

The Frank Evans Center assists students with locating ADR externships in Houston and other locations. The ADR Externship Program provides students with the opportunity to study dispute resolution processes from a practical perspective.  Past placements have included externships with the Harris County Dispute Resolution Center and the ADR division of the EEOC Regional Office in Houston.  For more information on potential ADR externships, please contact Debra Berman at dberman@stcl.edu or 713-646-2997.
