Meet Tevin Long, 2L and learn more about his story at South Texas Law in this Student Spotlight by the Career Resource Center.

Why did you choose to attend South Texas College of Law Houston?

I needed a strong, respected part-time program because I needed to work. I also spoke with an alumnus and he spoke very highly about the school, particularly the part-time program as he went part-time. Also, I really enjoyed visiting the school during one of the open house events that the school hosts for prospective students.

Where are you working next summer?

I’ll be at Norton Rose Fulbright! And I will be interning for Judge Jennifer Walker Elrod in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit this fall.

How did you secure that opportunity?

I obtained this opportunity through on-campus interviews hosted by the law school’s Career Resource Center.

How did the CRC help you successfully navigate the recruitment process?

The CRC took care of me from start to finish, from resume writing to mock interviews — especially Shantal Formia. She helped me write my resume and cover letter and helped me improve my interviewing skills.  I thought I knew how to interview. I did not. Shantal took time out of her personal life to meet with me early one day to help identify my issues and gave me an action plan to improve my interview skills. Then, she helped arrange mock interviews to practice on areas I was falling short. I did another mock interview through CRC, courtesy of Marie Garcia, for more practice. After all the time spent preparing, the CRC had me ready for 2024 Early OCI.

What are your career goals for the future?

I have two main career goals. First, I want to have a positive impact on those around me and the next class of lawyers who will come after me. Second, I want to give back to the South Texas Law community because I would not be where I am today without the people of this school. I’d like to come back to do anything that helps the next generation of students or otherwise promotes the school.

What advice would you share with the future law students going through recruitment?

Start networking early! For anyone who begins law school without connections in the legal community, do not be discouraged or hesitant! The next generation of students should know the South Texas Law community is willing to help you bridge those gaps.

The CRC does a phenomenal job of providing opportunities for students to meet people in the Houston legal community. Go to some of the events. Go see your CRC counselor. There is a high probability that someone in the building knows someone at the place where you want to work. So go shake hands, send emails, and get your name out there early! The South Texas community has your back for recruitment.

Which professors have influenced you and or your career path the most?

Several impacted me in different, helpful ways that put my career on its current trajectory. Specifically for career path, the short list is Dean Goodman, Prof. Hogan, and Prof. Moore.

What student organizations have you been involved with?

I have been involved with the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) and the Student Bar Association (SBA). My first year, I was a member of BLSA. This past year, I was the academic chair of BLSA and a student mentor for SBA.

Beyond the CRC, how has the South Texas Law community supported your growth?

In every way — including staff, professors, alumni, and Dean Barry. The South Texas community as a whole made me feel welcome, encouraged me from the start, and has supported my growth the entire time.  A testament to the community is getting to work for a South Texas grad, Cordt Akers, where I have gained so much practical experience. I met him at a CRC event on campus. We spoke, he gave me his card, then we met at his office. Then, I had a job with one of the most well-respected attorneys in the Houston area. The South Texas community is here to help students grow if you put in the effort.

What is something interesting about you that we can’t learn from your resume?

For some reason, I am perpetually hungry. I am always snacking throughout the day. I can eat a full meal, then return to my desk and grab a snack.
